About China-Japan Friendship Hospital

China-Japan Friendship Hospital (CJFH), founded on October 23, 1984, is a large general hospital under the direct leadership of the National Health Commission (NHC). Mr. Hu Yaobang, then General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Ms. Deng Yingchao, then Chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, autographed the hospital’s name in their own handwriting.

With altogether 2,087 beds (including those operated at the North Campus and the West Campus), CJFH has been committed to delivering medical care, researching, and educating future professionals. It provides health care services to the senior officials of the Central Government, constitutes the national emergency rescue teams and serves as the administration and training center for telemedicine programs organized in the name of the NHC.

As one of the first foreign assistance projects after China’s reform and opening up, CJFH was the most international, modern hospital with the most advanced equipment at that time. Since its establishment, CJFH has been at the forefront of upgrading medical facilities and service and systematic reform in hospitals and endeavoring to be the most modernized hospital in China.

In its development of more than 30 years, CJFH has been living up to the statements of science and humanism, following the track of modern medicine while preserving the essence of traditional Chinese medicine. It ranked top in many aspects among hospitals regional or nationwide. Many professors have left behind them milestones in the past three decades with their academic achievements and medical professionalism, including Professors Xin Yuling, Pan Xiaoren, Jiao Shude, Yin Huihe, Wang Guoxiang, and Chao Enxiang. It also undertook responsibilities for the country by working as a designated hospital for SARS patients at the height of the outbreak in 2003, sending medical practitioners to the tsunami-devastated areas in Indonesia in 2005, and serving the Beijing Olympics as a primary medical facility in 2008.

Academic achievements also showcases Dr. Wang Chen, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) who has made remarkable breakthroughs in treating pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension, respiratory failure, emerging infectious disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diseases related to tobacco addiction. Some of these important innovations have been listed in treatment guidelines practiced internationally.

Professor Pan Xiaoren has devoted himself to the “China Da Qing Diabetes Prevention Study” for more than 20 years. The study is a classic example setting a landmark in the research on primary prevention of type 2 diabetes. The epidemiological investigation into diabetes published in The New England Journal of Medicine by Professor Yang Wenying, based on statistics, has revealed a grave situation of diabetes prevention and treatment in the country. Professor Wang Guoxiang’s research in neurogenetics has drawn extensive attention at home and abroad. Professor Chao Enxiang took part in developing an herbal medication termed “Jin Hua Qing Gan Fang” in the treatment of A/H1N1 flu, which has represented an outstanding contribution to the prevention and treatment of emerging infectious diseases.

Already accredited and recognized as national key labs and clinical programs in China are such departments as Endocrinology, Thoracic Surgery, TCM Rheumatology, TCM Oncology, TCM Pulmonary Diseases, Clinical Nursing, Respiratory Medicine, Proctology, Rheumatology & Immunology, Pain Management, Geriatrics and Emergency Medicine.

Currently in CJFH there are over 500 medical professionals with senior or associate senior titles, 1,000 with Master's degrees or higher, and more than 200 master tutors and doctoral supervisors. CJFH has undertaken over 400 national or provincial research programs with many awards and honors from the state and ministry to its credit. The hospital serves as one of the clinical medical colleges for Peking University and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and the teaching hospital for Peking Union Medical College. It has established cooperation relationships with such famous academic institutions in China as Beihang University, and medical institutions and universities in Japan, the U.S. and the UK.

As a designated A-class medical institution, CJFH has been awarded the title of “the best hospital for foreigners in Beijing” by the Association for Foreigners. Now, it has opened direct payment businesses with over 40 foreign commercial insurance companies.

CJFH has been winners of awards and holders of honorary titles for its remarkable achievements in Party construction and spiritual civilization, such as “National Civilized Unit” and “Capital Civilized Unit”.
