An introduction to the nursing unit of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Department IV

What is the essence of life? Breathe in and breathe out—- which might tell the truth of it. How can we save lives and continue miracles when breath is gone and life is leaving? There are 30 beds in the respiratory intensive care unit of CJFH’s Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Department IV, mainly for patients with respiratory-related critical illness. There are 65 nurses (61 females) in the nursing unit, including 15 nurses specializing in ICU, blood purification and diabetes.

To further promote the development of nursing specialization, 15 nursing specialty groups were established, such as ECMO nursing group, CRRT nursing group and PICC nursing group. They aim to promote development by specialty, pay close attention to nursing details and process management, provide the best quality nursing service for critically ill patients, and become “special forces” to cure critically ill patients. The nurses standing on the edge of saving death are dedicated to creating an “honest, diligent, meticulous, humane” nursing service brand and showing people a new generation of “angels in white” belief in saving lives and injuries.

Today, with the rapid development of medicine science, ECMO has become the ultimate means of support to save the lives of dying patients. The nursing team constantly challenged the miracle of life, breaking through the nursing records of 69, 71, 73 and 122 days of single lung. In those days and nights, they were with critically ill patients all the time. There will always be spring blossoms in the corner of life. With the assistance of ECMO, one and another miracle of life happened and the flowers of life bloomed again and again.

At the beginning of 2018, in the face of major public health events, ICU nurses took the initiative to undertake the monitoring of respiratory critically ill patients. In the face of such problems as fewer hands, more patients and urgency of illness, the whole nursing team made all efforts to overcome all difficulties. They succeeded in making nine ECMOs and 10 CRRTs run at the same time and conquered the challenge of overloaded work. They speeded up the turnover of wards, adjusted shifts, coordinated overall planning, and strictly prevented infections, thus built an indestructible defense line for the treatment of patients.

While completing clinical nursing work with high quality, nurses actively participate in teaching and scientific research work. Each year, the department undertakes teaching tasks for more than 350 staff at different levels, including ICU specialist nurses, refresher nurses, nurses in regular training and interns. In the past two years, the department undertook two college-level projects, one teaching project of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, published more than 30 articles and applied for one utility model patent.

An introduction to the nursing unit of Lung Transplant Department

Since it was established on April 6, 2017, the Lung Transplant Department of CJFH has completed more than 150 operations, treated more than 800 perioperative and post-operative follow-up patients, assessed more than 300 patients in waiting, and successfully joined  the ranks of the eight major lung transplant centers across the world, bringing more hope to the majority of end-stage lung patients. Under the leadership of Academician Wang Chen and Professor Chen Jingyu, a multi-disciplinary team management model of pre-operation, mid-operation and post-operation is established.

25 nurses are working in the department, with an average age of 29 years. Where there is ‘life’, there is a nurse. They shoulder the responsibility of life every day. In order to ensure the standardized and process-oriented operations of lung transplantation, four lung transplantation operations were completed in a day at most. In March 2018, 15 lung transplantation operations were completed in two weeks. Nurses in the department worked 6,300 hours overtime in 2018. Due to the large number of critically ill patients, the number of rescues was nearly 1,000 times a year. Although we are a young nursing team, our nurses are the most careful, efficient and hardworking. Every time the rescue is successful, the greatest feeling of our team is tired but happy. We are workaholic women in the eyes of patients.

“There is no sudden change in the state of illness, only suddenly discovered change in the state of illness” is regarded as a wise saying, often used to remind ourselves to be highly responsible for the safety of the patient's life. In 2018, the Lung Transplantation Department of CJFH led the establishment of the China Lung Transplantation Alliance Nursing Group, planned to focus on the training of specialist competence in the joint departments, and continuously improve our nursing quality by formulating specialist quality standards and specialist nursing process, which was highly appraised by the vast number of lung transplant patients and their families. In the future, we will continue to uphold the professional spirit of respecting life, saving lives and helping the wounded, and willing to dedicate to provide more quality and efficient nursing care for patients with lung transplantation, and contribute to improving the level of professional nursing of lung transplantation in China. In the future, we will continue to uphold the professional spirit of respecting life, saving lives and helping the wounded, and willing to dedicate to providing more quality and efficient nursing care for patients with lung transplantation, and contribute to improving the level of professional nursing of lung transplantation in China.
